In unofficial returns, Duane Piper is the voters choice as the next sheriff of Forsyth County.
Forsyth County voters elected Duane Piper to be their next sheriff. In unofficial results Tuesday Piper received 62,405 votes and his challenger, write-in candidate DT Smith received 683 votes, according to the Forsyth County Voter Registrations & Elections Department. "In reviewing the initial report of write-ins for sheriff, DT Smith did get in excess of 680 votes," said Barbara Luth, Supervisor of Voter Registrations and Elections. "There are a lot of votes that need to be determined by the board [of elections] as to whether they will accept just Smith or DT." Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson will host an online town hall meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The 90-minute question and answer session will begin at 9 p.m. Eastern time. Piper plans to reorganize sheriff's office to make it more efficient and effective.
Now that the primary runoff elections are over and the candidates have had time to catch their breath, Cumming Patch thought readers might be interested in their post election comments. In the hotly contested sheriff's race, former Forsyth County Sheriff's Office lieutenant Duane Piper surprised a lot of people in defeating his former boss, Sheriff Ted Paxton, a three-term incumbent. Piper won by a razor thin margin of 341 votes or just over two percent. He did say, "he is honored and humbled by the confidence voters showed in him." While Martha Zoller won in five counties, including Forsyth, it's Doug Collins who will go on to represent Republicans in the U.S. House from the 9th district in Nov.
Forsyth County voters decided who they wanted to elect as their sheriff, coroner and commissioner in District 4 during Tuesday's Primary runoff elections. There were 13,702 ballots cast Tuesday, according to Barbara Luth, supervisor of the Forsyth County Voter Registrations & Elections Department. There were 3,944 ballots cast during early and advance voting and 466 absentee ballots by mail returned. Luth did say the only thing missing was six provisional votes that they will take a look at in the coming days. But she did point out, "It's not going to make a difference in any of the races."
