Students from Shiloh Point, Haw Creek and Broowood Elementary Schools win third annual fire safety poster contest.
The winners of this year's Fire Safety Poster Contest were announced recently and include the following: All three winners were treated to a pizza party with their class and local firefighters. The three runners up include: This was the third year of the contest hosted by the Forsyth County Fire Department. “We are certainly proud of these students, and of every student who submitted a poster,” said Fire Chief Danny Bowman. “We hope that the positive fire safety messages these young artists conveyed through their posters will be impactful to all who see them.” The three winners and three runners up will have the honor of having their artwork displayed in county buildings. To kick off May as National Water Safety Month, the department is providing safety tips to Forsyth County residents.
May is National Water Safety Month and, with temperatures on the rise and summertime right around the corner, the Forsyth County Fire Department wants residents to think about how they can keep themselves and their loved ones safe in and around the water. Drowning can occur in many locations and can happen in a myriad of places and locations such as a bucket left for a small child to get into, a bathtub where an infant or toddler is left alone for just a moment or an unlocked toilet for an infant or toddler to fall into. The annual charity event kicks off today in Forsyth County and continues on May 11 and May 18.
The Forsyth County Fire Department will join more than 100 other agencies in an effort to help burn victims. The department today, Saturday May 11 and Saturday May 18 will take part in the annual Give Burns the Boot® annual boot drive, which benefits the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. Firefighters will solicit donations at intersections throughout the county, which will be utilized for fire safety and prevention education, the support of medical facilities and help burn victims in their recovery. Funds will also go towards Camp Oo-U-La®, Georgia’s only camp held exclusively for burn-injured children. Authorities say a 78-year-old man died at the scene of a car accident Wednesday morning in north Forsyth County. Lee Ansell Franklin, of Cumming, was traveling west around 9:20 a.m. in a 2001 black Lincoln Town Car on Browns Bridge Road (Highway 369) and Charleston Park Road, when he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the fuel tank (also known as a saddle tank) of a semi-truck. "It was the saddle tank on the driver's side," said Division Chief Kevin Wallace of the Forsyth County Fire Department. The Forsyth County Fire Department is hosting two week-long summer camps.
Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in Forsyth County can learn what it takes to be a firefighter this summer as the Forsyth County Fire Department schedules two free week-long summer camp programs. Fire Camp: For students entering sixth grade in August 2013, will be held Monday, June 10 through Friday, June 14. Junior Fire Academy: For students entering seventh and eighth grade in August 2013, will be held Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28. Both camp programs are offered free of charge, according to a news release by the county. Autopsy and toxicology results of a woman whose body was found following a house fire in north Forsyth County are still pending.

The victims had to be extricated from the vehicle after it left the roadway and overturned down an embankment.
Two people were injured, including a 12-year-old boy, in a single-vehicle crash in Forsyth County late Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Chief Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Fire Department said the accident happened on Castleberry Road near the intersection of Piney Grove Road. "The car left the roadway and overturned down an embankment and ended upside down," he said. Fire personnel extricated both victims from the vehicle. "A challenging situation of course, said Shivers. Six fire personnel ranging in a variety of positions and ranks were promoted, while one employee steps down from a long career.
The Forsyth County Fire Department recognized the retirement of one of its own and promoted six fire personnel during a recent ceremony in front of family, friends and staff. Ranging in a variety of ranks and positions, the six who were promoted include: Lieutenant Barry Head who began his career with the FCFD in August 1997. He was formally promoted to the rank of division chief, fire marshal. Arson Investigator Debbie Lindstrom was formally promoted to the rank of deputy fire marshal. She will celebrate 11 years with the fire department next month. The FCFD also promoted Firefighter/EMT Brian Christie and Firefighter/EMT Jeremy Hamilton to the rank of lieutenant. DNR officials are searching Lake Lanier for a 47-year-old man "presumed deceased."
UPDATE: 2-19-13, 1 p.m. It's been one week since George M. Counts of Tucker went missing on Lake Lanier. DNR officials say they are in recovery mode as they look for the body of Counts. "All things indicate that we are in recovery mode at this point, and that he is presumed deceased," said Melissa Cummings, DNR spokesperson. "The rangers that are still involved in the search want nothing more than to be able to locate him to assist the family." Morning and evening surface searches will continue this week and perhaps longer, according to Cummings.
