Downtown Cumming Landscape Changes

Demolition of existing downtown structures is complete.

The landscape of downtown Cumming has changed forever. Demolition that began in January on several structures including the parking deck once located at the intersection of East Main Street and Mason Street across from the Dairy Queen is complete. The empty lot is the site of the future new Forsyth County Courthouse. See video of empty lot where structures once stood. During the regular meeting on Thursday, March 7, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved the naming of the buildings. The new Courthouse will be called the "Forsyth County Courthouse" and the existing Courthouse will be called the "Forsyth County Courthouse Annex." Downtown Parking Deck Gone

All that remains of the parking deck in downtown Cumming is rubble.

The parking deck once located at the intersection of East Main Street and Mason Street in downtown Cumming across from the Dairy Queen is now a pile of rubble. The nearly 20-year-old parking deck was the first structure to be demolished as it was situated on the site of the county's future new courthouse and jail. The other structures on the list to be razed, include a government building that housed several offices of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and a professional building. A small building on the site of the new jail will also be demolished. Jodi Gardner, spokesperson for the county, said the demolition process is scheduled to take approximately 45 days. City, County Offices Closed on New Year's Day

City, county and federal employees are off on Jan. 1.

The City of Cumming and Forsyth County government offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 1 for the New Year's holiday. All operations required for the comfort and safety of citizens will remain open. Post Offices will also be closed on Jan. 1. Express Mail only will be delivered on New Year’s Day. Forsyth County’s three recycling convenience centers will also be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1. The city and county offices will resume regular operating hours on Wednesday, Jan. 2 and all Post Offices will be open and regular mail delivery will resume on that day. Don’t miss any Cumming news. Forsyth County Extends Local Business Initiative

Program strives to keep business local.

Forsyth County is continuing to concentrate on providing more opportunities for local companies to do business with the county government. Earlier this month during a regular meeting, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners voted to extend the existing Local Business Initiative through Dec. 31, 2013, a press release stated. The goal of the program, which has been in place since April 2009, is to return as much taxpayer money back into the local economy as possible. “The program’s goal is to provide more opportunities for local businesses to conduct business with the county government,” said Procurement Director Donna Kukarola. “Forsyth County purchases a wide variety of materials, equipment and services, so there are opportunities for …

Forsyth County Parking Deck Closing Soon

Forsyth County will permanently close the parking deck in downtown Cumming on Dec. 28.

The parking deck located at the intersection of East Main Street and Mason Street in downtown Cumming will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28. If you use the parking deck make sure your vehicle is removed by that time. The parking deck is scheduled for demolition to allow for construction of a new courthouse approved by voters in Nov. 2011 as part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program. "The demolition is expected to begin in mid-January, with the specific date to be determined as we complete the preparation that must be done in advance of the demolition," wrote Jodi Gardner, spokesperson for the county, in an e-mail to Cumming Patch. County's 2013 Budget Process Underway

Budget meetings have been conducted with each of the county departments and offices.

Work is underway by Forsyth County staff and the Finance Committee to develop the county’s preliminary 2013 budget. Budget meetings have been conducted with each of the county departments and offices to review in depth their budget submissions, and to make any preliminary adjustments as appropriate.   Presentation of the preliminary budget to the Board of Commissioners is scheduled for Tuesday, June 12. Public hearings regarding the millage rate are tentatively slated for July 5 and July 19.

In Memoriam: Funeral for Forsyth County Worker Killed in Head-On Collision

Visitation and funeral service will be held for Johnny Padgett, the Forsyth County Government worker, killed in a motorcycle accident Monday.

Mr. Johnny Padgett, age 50, passed away Monday May 21, in Forsyth County as the result of a motorcycle accident. He is survived by his mother & father; Frances & Jake Padgett of Jasper, one son; Elijah Padgett of Jasper, one sister; Angela Kidd, of Stockbridge. Visitation will be held at McDonald & Son Funeral Home in Cumming today from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The funeral service will be Friday, May 25, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cagle Funeral Home, with Mr. Don Musgrave officiating. Scheduled Water Outage Thursday Night

Water service will be temporarily affected in an area of north Forsyth County.

Water service will be temporarily affected in an area of north Forsyth County beginning tonight at 10 p.m. The scheduled water outage is to allow for work on a waterline relocation project related to the intersection project at Jot-em-Down Road, Mayfield Drive and Pea Ridge Road, according to Jodi Gardner, director of communications for Forsyth County. "Customers in the area may experience low pressure, but only two customers will be out of water," she said. According to a notice on the county government Web site, affected areas include Pea Ridge Road, Anderson Lake Road, Highway 53 and Jot-em-Down Road. Water service is expected to be restored Friday at approximately 7 a.m.
