Camping Season in Forsyth Kicks Off Monday

The 2013 camping season officially kicks off in Forsyth County.

Shady Grove Campground located at 7800 Shadburn Ferry Road opens on Monday to the delight of many. The campground, on the shores of Lake Lanier, offers 110 campsites for visitors and is open through November 3. “Shady Grove Campground’s popularity grows each year,” said Jerry Kinsey, director of Forsyth County Parks and Recreation. “We look forward to welcoming campers as we officially begin the 2013 camping season in Forsyth County on March 25.” This is the third camping season since the county made a variety of improvements at the campground. Projects, which were completed during the off-season prior to the 2011 camping season, included expanded camping pads for larger recreational vehicles, a grassy play area and a shoreline restoration…

Local Photo: Spotlight on Forsyth County Employees for Years of Service

Two employees with the parks and rec department hit the 25 year mark.

William White and Wendy Frazier, both of the Parks and Recreation Department, were each recognized for reaching 25 years of service with the county. The two were presented with a plaque at Thursday's Forsyth County Board of Commissioners meeting. Editor's Note: Tommy Bruce accepted the plaque on behalf of Wendy Frazier who was unable to attend. Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Receives Award

The parks and recreation department was nominated for the award by Special Olympics Forsyth County.

The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department recently received the Special Olympics Georgia Training for Life Award in recognition of its ongoing involvement with and support of Special Olympics. The parks and recreation department was nominated for the award by Special Olympics Forsyth County (SOFC) for its support, facilities and staff made available to the organization over the years. “We cannot say enough about our Parks and Recreation,” said Susan Darlington, local coordinator for SOFC. “They [parks and rec] have proven time and again that they are committed to supporting Special Olympics Forsyth and strive to include many of our athletes in their everyday activities.” Darlington presented the award to the department at Thursday…

Fowler Park Offering Children's Acting Workshop

The four-week workshop is entitled, “Imagine It! Do It!,” presented by Forsyth County Parks and Recreation.

If your children have an interest in the performing arts – beginning this weekend they can discover their acting talent by participating in a children's acting workshop offered at Fowler Park. “This program will offer young people the opportunity to have fun discovering a new talent,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Kinsey said. “By using their imagination and expressing themselves through acting, children participating in this workshop can improve their confidence while having fun.” The four-week workshop entitled, “Imagine It! Do It!,” is presented by Forsyth County Parks and Recreation and is available for children ages 6- to 8-years-old. Fall Softball Survey Underway

The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department is currently conducting a survey regarding community interest in a fall softball league.

If our community had a fall softball league would you support it and participate in some capacity? That's what the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department would like to know. The department is currently conducting a survey and is looking for input from parents and participants that would be interested in an opportunity to play recreational softball in a fall league. The league is geared for 15 and 16-year-old girls, according to Wayne Maddox, athletic manager of Forsyth County Parks and Recreation. Summer Camps at Sawnee Mountain

Sawnee Mountain Preserve is offering several summer camps for children ages 4- to 6-years-old.

Summer fun and adventure await campers during Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department’s Young Mountaineers Camp. The weeklong, nature-themed camps are being offered throughout the summer at Sawnee Mountain Preserve. The Young Mountaineers Camp is open to children ages 4- to 6-years-old. Campers will explore the trails of Sawnee Mountain while learning about the plants and animals that live in the forest in the area. Children will also get to hike, play nature-themed games, create crafts and have fun. Sharon Elementary Opens Outdoor Learning Area

The DIGS has been specifically designed to integrate outdoor learning with classroom curriculum.

Sharon Elementary School in south Forsyth County hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday for the grand opening of its outdoor learning area called DIGS (Discover, Inspire, Grow, Succeed). The Sharon DIGS is a state of the art educational area which in unlike any other in Georgia. The DIGS is a 15,000 square foot area hosting more than 50,000 pounds of boulders rocks, and stones, donated from Mountain Stone, Lafarge Aggregates, and Polycor for the study of native geology. There is enough dirt and plants, thanks to John Deere Landscapes, for the students to maintain their own vegetable and herb gardens in raised and ground level beds.  A WeatherBug Weather Station, complete with a digital system communicating with Sharon’s new science …
