Marchex Institute says Ohio residents swear the most on consumer calls but Georgians are among the most courteous.
We're the Peach State - because we're so sweet...mostly. That's the finding from the Marchex Institute, a data analysis firm. Just in time for National Etiquette Week, Marchex released findings on the most courteous and the least courteous states in the nation. The Institute examined more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months. You know, the calls that "may be recorded for training purposes." The calls were placed by consumers to businesses across 30 industries, including cable and satellite companies, auto dealerships, pest control centers and more, says Marchex. The Institute scanned for curse words from A to F to S (use your imagination). Analysts then linked the frequency of those words with all 50 states. Georgians …

Update: Friday, March 8, 7:54 a.m. It has been more than two weeks since Lance White, president of the Humane Society of Forsyth County, wrote his "Letter to the Editor" to Cumming Patch. Since publication of the letter we heard from more than 100 readers in Forsyth County and across the U.S. who had plenty to say about the situation. During a brief conversation with Lance, he told me that no action has been taken against him from the woman who accused him of stealing her dog (mentioned in the letter to the editor). Since the week of Feb. 18, Lance told me that the woman and her male dog (pictured) has since left the residence, where Lance found the tethered dog, to an unknown location. The group is asking Deal to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases.
Advocates for marijuana law reform are calling on the state of Georgia to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases, according to a recent release from Georgia Campaign for Access, Reform, & Education (Georgia CARE). The call comes after state prosecutors said they lack the resources to prosecute a backlog of child exploitation cases in a January press conference. In Georgia, possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana carries up to 10 years in state prison. Roswell Police deal with their share of marijuana cases on a daily basis. U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss has blamed frustration with Washington, a lack of leadership in the White House and gridlock in the Senate for his decision not to seek a third term in the U.S. Senate.
U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) announced Friday that he will not be seeking a third term in Congress in 2014. According to The Washington Post, Chambliss said his decision was based on his frustration with Washington and not because he feared defeat in a primary. The SEC, Alabama and the University of Georgia are warning fans to beware of counterfeit tickets to Saturday's sold-out SEC title game.
If somebody's trying to sell you a ticket to Saturday's SEC Championship game between Georgia and Alabama, take a close look. It had better have two strips of SEC holographic foil at the top, and more foil on the championship logo in the middle. You ought to be able to see the SEC logo and name in the foil as you move the ticket around in your hand. If you can't, walk away. The Bulldogs could coast to an SEC East title - if they can get past the undefeated Gators.
So, in their last two games, Georgia got trounced by South Carolina and barely squeaked by the unimpressive Kentucky Wildcats. And yet, Bulldogs faithful are still talking about a shot at the SEC championship. Why? Because the Bulldogs have only one loss, and if they beat Florida on Saturday, a relatively gentle schedule gives them an opportunity to cruise to the SEC East title. The schedule is so favorable, an AP reporter suggested that Georgia "might be the most fortunate team in the nation." It might be better to be lucky than good, but are the Bulldogs good enough to beat a Florida team that wiped the floor with South Carolina, the team that wiped the floor with Georgia? There have been 308 cases reported and 23 people have died so far; Georgia is the 17th state to be affected.
Georgia is now the 17th state impacted by the fungal meningitis outbreak linked to tainted steroid injections, according to the CDC. According to ABCNews.com, around 14,000 patients are thought to have received injections of the steroid. The Forsyth Street Ambulatory Surgery Center in Macon is the only clinic in Georgia to have received a shipment. The AJC reports that the person infected is a 66-year-old Macon woman. She is in stable condition. “Clinically she doesn’t appear to be that sick,” said Dr. Patrick O’Neal, the agency’s director of health protection told the AJC, “but we feel an abundance of caution is needed.” The current meningitis outbreak has been traced to a specific product and company. The Bulldogs are hoping for a strong performance, and some help from Florida, to get back into the SEC East title hunt.
We knew Bulldogs fans would be rooting for Florida this week, so the Gators can beat South Carolina and restore Georgia's opportunity to win the SEC East division. Aaron Murray's even telling people to. Murray told the AP that Georgia faithful have "a free pass" to be one-time Florida fans and added, "I definitely am." UGA head coach Mark Richt also got into the act, telling the press: "I'm definitely a Gator fan this week." Of course, what Richt, Murray and Bulldogs fans really need to concentrate on is getting the job done at Kentucky on Saturday.
