Forsyth County commuters who travel on GA 400 and who are use to using the toll booth will notice a big change come this November - there will be no toll booth. The Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority said on Thursday the toll plaza will come down on November 21, reports WSBTV.com. Gov. Deal: GA 400 Tolls End in December 2013 Last summer Gov. Nathan Deal promised an end to the tolls by Dec. 1, 2013, saying that bonds issued by the state will be paid off by that time, allowing the tolls to be removed. But it looks like that measure has been moved to a week before Thanksgiving, weather permitting. It's been a long time coming and while some are thrilled with the July 19 announcement that Gov. Nathan Deal has pledged to remove the Ga. 400 toll booth in December of next year, others feel it's not soon enough. Lead by nearby Roswell resident, Garland Favorito, VoterGa’s Free Ga. 400 project leaders have called for the removal of the toll since it was extended during 2010. The group presented Deal with 400 petitions on July 17 requesting that he adhere to the original Ga. 400 construction agreements between Atlanta and the state, according to a recent press release from VoterGa. The Governor said the state can't pay off bonds tied to toll revenue until after Dec. 1, 2013, or it would pay a penalty.
Gov. Nathan Deal promises that an end to tolls on GA 400 is in sight, though that won't be until after Dec. 1, 2013 – yes, next year. The Governor said bonds issued by the state will be paid off by that time, allowing the tolls to be removed. This will stop collection four years earlier than previously planned, according to a release sent out this morning. “Ga. 400 commuters have paid more than their fair share already, and this is the earliest we can bring it down without paying a penalty for early repayment of the bonds,” Deal said. “When the Ga. 400 toll went up, the state of Georgia promised commuters that it wasn’t forever. Renewed calls by groups around metro Atlanta for Governor Nathan Deal to keep his campaign promise to remove the tolls on Georgia 400 prompted his office to give a response — which was essentially that his hands are tied. Governor Deal's spokesperson, Brian Robinson, sat down with 11alive to talk about the reason the promise had to be broken. "I think people of Georgia know the governor can't break contracts. There's a chance tolls on Georgia 400 will soon be suspended--at least for a little while. The State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) will be making technology upgrades to the "cruise” lanes at the Georgia 400 toll plaza over the weekend of Friday, June 24 through Monday, June 27. The work could potentially impact tolls, according to an article by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Though originally set to end on July 1 of this year, the tolls were continued by a vote by the state legislature last fall. Now the state authority will be making improvements to the 20-year-old toll plaza near the perimeter.
