Thousands sign online petition to stop KKK plans to adopt a stretch of roadway in Union County, Ga.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) late Tuesday denied a request from the Ku Klux Klan to adopt a stretch of roadway in Union County, Ga. (about 64 miles north of Cumming). According to a GDOT press release, the department, after consultation with Gov. Nathan Deal and the State Transportation Board Chair, denied the application. "Maintaining the safety of our roadways is this Department’s foremost mission," the press release stated. "Encountering signage and members of the KKK along a roadway would create a definite distraction to motorists." The GDOT also advised the section of roadway listed in the application was ineligible due to the posted limit exceeding 55 mph. "Further, promoting an organization with a history of …

This section of the roadway is being rebuilt. A detour is in place through the end of the year if the weather cooperates, according to a GDOT news release. “The detour was necessary because of the grade changes and shifting of Bald Ridge to align with Mary Alice Park in the finished intersection," said Georgia DOT District Engineer Bayne Smith. Are GA 400 Express Lanes the Way to Go?

The GDOT held its third meeting seeking public feedback on the Georgia 400 Express Lanes Feasibility Study.

Jim Allison is not a fan of toll lanes, but he would welcome a free flowing commute from his Alpharetta home to work in Sandy Springs. “I get on at Mansell and get off at Abernathy,” he said. “I could get on at Windward Parkway but the more I can avoid Ga. 400, the better it is.” On Tuesday, the Georgia Department of Transportation held its third meeting seeking public feedback on the Ga. 400 Express Lanes Feasibility Study. The meeting was held at First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs. The tolled express lanes would run 24 miles on Ga. 400 between I-285 and Highway 20 in Forsyth County. Similar to the express lanes on I-85, toll for entering the express lanes would increase as congestion in the regular lanes increase. “You don’t stop to …

I also think this is not a sensible idea. Government needs to quit spending our tax dollars. On 400 you have four lanes and then they go down to two lanes where most people are living. North of Windward parkway, Why not widened 400 instead of asking tax payer to pay to drive on this highway when they told us the 400 toll would be removed in 2009 when the road was payed for. This did not happen. …   more ›
