Championship Games on Lambert's Turf

Two Georgia High School Association championships will be determined on Lambert High School's home fields this weekend.

Championship turf will reside at Lambert High School this weekend, and it could mean two state titles for the Longhorns. The Longhorns host both the Class AAAA boys soccer and Class A-AAAA boys lacrosse championship games Friday and Saturday nights. Undefeated and top-ranked Lambert (22-0) hosts Greenbrier (20-1) in the soccer championship game beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Longhorns enter the game after beating Marist 2-0 in the GHSA semifinals on Tuesday behind a goal and assist by Trexler Bennett, according to a report in the AJC. It was their second playoff shutout, including a 3-0 over McIntosh last week. Greenbrier also has two consecutive shutouts — 4-0 over Tucker and 2-0 over Starr's Mill. The boys lacrosse title in the …

Four Forsyth Teams Reach State Hoops

First round of the Georgia High School Association basketball tournament begins Friday.

Forsyth County Schools will be represented by four teams in the Georgia High School Association girls basketball tournaments, which begin this weekend all across the state. Teams from North Forsyth, Forsyth Central, West Forsyth and Lambert high schools all reached the state tournaments in their respective classifications, based on their performances in last week’s region tournaments. North Forsyth and West Forsyth will open play in the Class AAAAA first round Friday night. North Forsyth (20-8) will host Wheeler (13-14) at 7 p.m. Friday. North, which lost to Alpharetta 38-27 in the Region 6-AAAAA championship last weekend, has won six of its last seven games. Wheeler is the third-place team from Region 5-AAAAA. 5 Keys to a West Forsyth Victory

West Forsyth (11-1) plays at Grayson (12-0) Friday in the Class AAAAA football quarterfinals.

The West Forsyth football team has done its share of proving naysayers wrong this season. Early in the season, some said the Wolverines wouldn’t make the playoffs — one prediction even had Roswell and North Forsyth (teams that combined for a 1-19 record) both reaching the postseason, not West Forsyth. But a 9-1 regular season and No. 2 seeding in Region 6-AAAAA said otherwise. West (now 11-1) then won its first playoff game in its five-year history, a 13-7 win over Etowah two weeks ago. Then, the Wolverines were a three-touchdown underdog last week against fourth-ranked Hillgrove, but came away with a 40-28 win by dominating the second half, turning more heads in their direction. Still, with nationally ranked and unbeaten Grayson (12-0) up…

5 Reasons West Forsyth Will Win

West Forsyth (10-1) plays at Hillgrove (11-0) in the second round of the Class AAAAA football playoffs.

Are you concerned about West Forsyth's chances of beating undefeated Hillgrove Friday night and advance in the Class AAAAA football playoffs? Don't be. Here are five reasons why the Wolverines can — and will — win: 1. Winning Is All They Know: The Wolverines don't know what it's like not to be successful on the football field. In only their fourth full season of playing varsity ball, they are 33-11 overall. 2. What to Do About Jake? West Forsyth tailback Jake Wieczorek is a do-everything weapon. He'll run and catch passes for touchdowns, and if you're not careful, he might throw for one, too. No doubt, Hillgrove will know where Wieczorek is at all times. 3. This Defense Doesn't Rest: The Wolverines have allowed only 27 points in their last…

West Forsyth Wins Nail-Biter Over Etowah 13-7

School celebrates first ever playoff win; travel to Powder Springs next week to face undefeated Hillgrove.

West Forsyth held off Etowah 13-7 in a nail-biter Friday night in the first round of the Class AAAAA football playoffs. It was the school’s first playoff win in history. “The big thing about tonight was having a home playoff game,” said head coach Frank Hepler. “Our crowd, our administration and our faculty were behind us all week.” The Wolverines dominated the entire first half, jumping out to a 13-0 lead and holding the Etowah offense to only two first downs. “Our defense doesn’t always get the same publicity as the offensive guys and they know that, but they really stepped up tonight,” said Hepler. Junior Jake Wieczorek scored the game’s first touchdown on a 6-yard run with 8:03 left in the first quarter. The touchdown was set up on a …

Patch Picker Predicts Wins for West and Lambert

West Forsyth and Lambert picked to win their first playoff games.

Etowah (6-4) at West Forsyth (9-1) West Forsyth’s first playoff win in its five-year history must come over a team it defeated earlier in the year. The Wolverines, enjoying their first nine-win season, plays an Etowah team that is making its sixth straight playoff. The Class AAAAA first-round playoff games is Friday at West Forsyth. West beat Etowah 21-13 on Sept. 9 in the middle of a three-game road streak that helped launch the Wolverines to a 5-0 start. In an unusual schedule twist, West Forsyth played only four home games during the regular season, but won them all. Led by running back Jake Wieczorek and quarterback A.J. Erdely, the Wolverines could not only win their first playoff game, but also move on past the second round, too. …

GHSA Approves New Class for State High Schools

The state high school athletic governing body voted 26-24 today to add a Class AAAAAA for Georgia high schools, ending the controversy over a proposed 4/8 plan.

MACON -- Georgia high schools will crown six state champions in each sport next year as the state moves from a Class AAAAA to Class AAAAAA system. By a vote of 26-24, the Georgia High School Association Executive Committee approved the six classification system proposed by former Brookwood High School Athletic Director Dave Hunter. The vote came shortly after the committee overwhelmingly rejected the controversial 4/8 proposal advanced by Executive Committee Chairman Stan Ethridge of Savannah. That vote was surprisingly lopsided with 35 of the 50 members opposed. The 4/8 system would have divided Georgia high schools into four classifications for the regular season, subdivided them into eight classifications for the playoffs and thus …
