A private ceremony will be held on April 6 for Marty Counts on the shore of the lake he loved and where he died in a boating mishap. The 47-year-old Tucker resident was reported missing on Feb. 11 after a nighttime fishing excursion on Lake Lanier alone on his boat, and his body was found five weeks later. The cause of death has not yet been established, according to Melissa Cummings of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division, but there was "no apparent trauma." She told Patch that "it does not appear that he fell and struck his head...but cannot yet rule out other health issues, such as a heart attack." A family of four is recognized by the Lake Lanier Association for their recent rescue of a family of four.
The Lake Lanier Association has awarded its Good Samaritan Award to Steven and Sophia Clanton for their recent rescue of a family including two small children whose jon boat capsized into 47-degree water at Lake Lanier. The family, a father, mother, five-year-old boy, and seven-month-old baby girl, were recreating in a small fishing boat on March 10 when their boat was swamped by waves created by a combination of larger passing boats and wind, according to Joanna Cloud, executive director of LLA. The Clantons, who live in Snellville, happened to be in the area fishing from their own boat with their two sons. When the small boat capsized, the Clantons were able to get to the family in the water, pull them out to safety, give them clothing …
The 2013 camping season officially kicks off in Forsyth County.
Shady Grove Campground located at 7800 Shadburn Ferry Road opens on Monday to the delight of many. The campground, on the shores of Lake Lanier, offers 110 campsites for visitors and is open through November 3. “Shady Grove Campground’s popularity grows each year,” said Jerry Kinsey, director of Forsyth County Parks and Recreation. “We look forward to welcoming campers as we officially begin the 2013 camping season in Forsyth County on March 25.” This is the third camping season since the county made a variety of improvements at the campground. A bill that would lower the state's Boating Under the Influence legal limit and institute boating safety regulations now has cleared both houses of the Georgia General Assembly. On Wednesday, March 20, the House passed Senate Bill 136 by a 146-17 vote. The Senate unanimously passed the bill recently. Gov. Nathan Deal is expected to sign the bill, which carries the names of Griffin and Jake Prince of Buford, and Kile Glover of Atlanta. A Georgia bill drafted in response to recent boating fatalities on Lake Lanier would lower the state's BUI limit to that of the limit for motorists. Other boating safety changes also would become law. Senate Bill 136, which was co-sponsored by a Gwinnett legislator, specifically has some acts titled the "Jake and Griffin Prince BUI Law" and the "Kile Glover Boat Education Law." The bill passed the state Senate on March 1 by a 50-0 vote and now is in the House. The 2013 legislative session ends Friday, March 22. The bill would lower the legal blood-alcohol limit for boat operators to 0.08 grams, the same as that for motorists. Gov. Nathan Deal called for such a move last June. UPDATE: 3-18-13, 11:15 p.m. The body of a man, who had been missing on Lake Lanier since Feb. 18, has been identified, according to Melissa Cummings, spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources. "Identification was confirmed today [Monday] following an autopsy identifying the victim as 47-year-old George Marty Counts of Tucker, Georgia," said Cummings. Cummings added that no cause of death has been listed yet and there was no apparent trauma shown. "So, for example - it does not appear that he fell and struck his head or otherwise causing him to fall overboard, but cannot yet rule out other health issues, such as a heart attack," she said. Jeffrey Hubbard, who was driving the personal watercraft that was involved with the death of Atlanta youth Kile Glover on Lake Lanier last year, has been indicted by a Hall County grand jury. Hubbard, described as a friend of Glover's family, has been indicted on the following charges: homicide by vessel, serious injury by vessel, reckless operation of a vessel, unlawful operation of a personal watercraft, and boat traffic violation, according to a Department of Natural Resources news release. Hubbard was arrested Friday (March 1) by rangers with Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and is in the Hall County Detention Center, the release said. My family have responsible boaters on lake lanier for many years. This problem does not arise from just the alcohol. People need to be better educated about operating a watercraft before using one. Much in the same way you must obtain a drivers license. And they need to pass a certification class on the safety of operating a watercraft.
