The Georgia State Patrol reported its troopers investigated 586 accidents as of daybreak today, Jan. 2.
Georgia State Troopers have investigated more crashes during this New Year's holiday than last year, with injuries rising above New Year's 2012 levels, and almost as many deaths – six so far this year, compared to seven last year. The GSP investigated three of the fatal traffic accidents, with local agencies investigating the other three. Troopers have investigated 585 accidents as of daybreak today, Jan. 1, which included 266 injuries and three deaths. During last year's entire 102-hour holiday, the Department of Public Safety investigated 296 accidents. Those accidents included 172 injuries and 7 deaths. What to eat on New Year's Day.
The old southern adage says, "Peas for pennies, greens for dollars, and cornbread for gold… Eat poor on New Year's, and eat fat the rest of the year!" When I moved to Georgia about six years ago, there were a few southern folkways that I really had to acclimate to. Some were good--people asking how you are and how your day is going, courteous drivers, and people trying to feed you every time you go over to their house. Some were confusing--groom's cakes, fried green tomatoes, the crowds of teenagers sitting in the Walmart parking lot. And some were just plain scary--"Wow, you really are going to put four cups of sugar in that sweet tea and drink it for breakfast! OK." City, county and federal employees are off on Jan. 1.
The City of Cumming and Forsyth County government offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 1 for the New Year's holiday. All operations required for the comfort and safety of citizens will remain open. Post Offices will also be closed on Jan. 1. Express Mail only will be delivered on New Year’s Day. Forsyth County’s three recycling convenience centers will also be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1. The city and county offices will resume regular operating hours on Wednesday, Jan. 2 and all Post Offices will be open and regular mail delivery will resume on that day. Don’t miss any Cumming news. The South is steeped in tradition and many of those traditions revolve around food. Two of the dishes that have been prepared through the years as we ring in the new year are Hoppin’ John and greens. Hoppin' John is a black-eyed pea dish. The peas symbolize coins. A shiny dime, thrown into this black-eyed pea and rice dish, is said to bring good luck to the person who finds the dime in his serving. Of course, if the recipient bites down on the dime, then the good luck only comes to his dentist. Turnip, or other greens, are another traditional Southern dish which is often served along with the Hoppin' John. They make a great pair. The color of the greens represents money and is said to bring a prosperous year. There could be more to having…

Hi Brenda, The dime, penny, coins, etc... are symbolic of the peas and so for good luck the custom is to either put a coin in the pot or under the plate or dinner bowl.   more ›
