Three People Injured in 3-Vehicle Wreck on Highway 53

The three-vehicle crash shut down Highway 53 for several hours Tuesday morning.

Three people were injured in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning that shut down Highway 53 near the Hall County line for several hours, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. At about 8:57 a.m., Bobby Simonds, 69, of Toccoa, Ga., was traveling westbound on Highway 53 in a heavy-duty work van owned by Clipper Petroleum. He began to slow the vehicle down as he approached a large amount of mud that had spilled onto the highway. As he was slowing down he was rear-ended by a FedEx truck driven by Carlos McDonald, 58, of Danielsville, Ga. Deputy Sheriff John Crane reported that upon impact the FedEx truck slid into the back of the work van, pushing both vehicles into the mud. The FedEx truck then slid into the eastbound lane of …

Festive Weekend in Cumming with 'Celebration of Lights'

"I know it's the holidays with this event," said local news anchor who emceed annual tree lighting event as thousands converge on the campus of Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

WSB-TV's morning news anchor Fred Blankenship emceed the 23rd annual "Celebration of Lights Christmas Tree Lighting" event at Northside Hospital-Forsyth Saturday.  The tree lighting was the culmination of holiday festivities that included the Jingle Jog 5K road race and parade within the city of Cumming on Market Place Boulevard. Blankenship made his way through the tent which housed the events and had his annual photo taken with hospital volunteer Julie Brennan.  "I wake up with Fred every morning," said Brennan cheekily. "I know it's the holidays with this event," said Blankenship. Northside Hospital-Forsyth earns the Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality.

Northside Hospital-Forsyth and Northside Hospital-Atlanta have earned the Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality. The Joint Commission awarded Northside the Disease-Specific Care Certification for pneumonia for a second time. "Northside is proud of the continued commitment of our staff and physicians to offer high quality and compassionate care to our patients," said Skip Putnam, CEO of Northside Hospital-Forsyth and vice president of administration, Northside Hospital. Northside Hospital-Cherokee was certified for the first time in 2010 and, together, the three hospitals remain the only Georgia hospitals, of nine in the nation, to receive certification in pneumonia care.
