Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.
Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31st, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because of…

If the needles on your Christmas tree are starting to drop faster than you can keep up with, it may be time to recycle the tree. The “Bring One for the Chipper” Christmas tree recycling event is underway through Saturday, Jan. 26, at several locations around Cumming sponsored by Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB). The annual event has become a tradition for many residents who end the holiday season by recycling their Christmas tree. A wood chipper at the below locations processes the trees into mulch. “We are very excited to see the number of trees recycled in Forsyth County increasing every year,” said Environmental Program Manager Tammy Wright. “It is a win-win scenario – the program provides a convenient way for residents to dispose…

The school is one of 90,000 schools and community groups across the globe collecting almost 50 different kinds of products and packaging for recycling.
Cumming Elementary School deserves congratulations for the amount of waste they are keeping out of the local landfill. The school is one of the top collectors of hard-to-recycle waste in TerraCycle's nationwide Brigade programs. The students collect Capri Sun drink pouches, Frito-Lay chip bags, cookie wrappers and Elmer's glue containers among several other items, which earn them money for charity and keeps the garbage out of the local landfill. The school has earned more than $2,620 from recycling items that would otherwise be thrown away, which translates to approximately 130,806 units of waste. TerraCycle turns the collected packaging into new products such as tote bags, recycling bins, watering cans and backpacks. The school is one …

Today is Earth Day 2012 and in honor of Mother Earth - Cumming Patch shares a few tips on how to be a bit more "green." 1. Save Energy: Turn off lights whenever possible. Use hybrid (reduced energy) light bulbs. Unplug appliances (phantom energy) when not in use. A mild winter this year doesn’t mean that next won’t be a bear; check your home for energy leaks and re-insulate. 2. Pick Up Litter: Many of us are taking walks these days to stay healthy. Take a plastic bag with you and pick up any litter you might see on our roads, along our brooks and streams and in our beautiful parks. 3. Use Green Transportation: Walk, ride or bike whenever possible – Skip the car! 4. Go Chemical-Free around the Home: Adopt a chemical-…

This is the last weekend to get that Christmas tree to the chipper. The “Bring One for the Chipper” Christmas tree recycling event is underway through Saturday, Jan. 28, at several locations around Cumming sponsored by Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB). The annual event has become a tradition for many residents who end the holiday season by recycling their Christmas tree. A wood chipper at the below locations processes the trees into mulch. “Recycling these trees provides mulch to cover walking trails as well as help the ground around plants retain moisture,” said Environmental Program Manager Tammy Wright. “We are excited to see the number of Forsyth County residents recycling their trees increasing every year.” The “Bring One for …

How to keep your poinsettia looking beautiful next season.
Did you know that poinsettias can grace our homes for more than one Christmas season? Being that one of my New Year's resolutions is to expand my habits of recycling, I am determined to invest the considerable commitment of time, effort and patience required to re-use my gorgeous poinsettia next year. I have always intended to attempt this, but was intimidated by what seemed like the overly strict precision and timing necessary for success. The financial benefits just never seemed to justify the effort involved (although the "green" ones do!). Not that I don't enjoy these types of projects, I just know my track record with consistency over time, which is what a successful outcome requires. This is the procedure: In early spring, cut …

On April 22, the entire country will join in socialism’s celebration. Ira Einhorn, who claims to have been on stage to host the first Earth Day event at the Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, currently is serving prison time for the beating death of his ex-girlfriend, Holly Maddux.
