Chance of Snow, Wintry Mix Through Weekend for Cumming, Forsyth

Portions of north and central Georgia may see flurries, sleet or snow this weekend and freezing temps through Sunday night.

Portions of north and central Georgia could see some snow flurries or a wintry mix as temps drop headed into the weekend. Overnight freezing temps are expected through Sunday night, and Friday night and Saturday hold slight chances of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a freeze warning that includes Cumming and Forsyth County. It's effective through 9 a.m. Friday. "A fast-moving but potent upper low sweeping across the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians [on] Saturday will bring a chance for at least light wintry precipitation to north Georgia," according to NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook. "Any accumulations are expected to remain light at this time. Generally a half inch or less mainly across far…

GDOT Issues Inclement Weather Road Advisory

GDOT is urging motorists to monitor weather conditions in advance with the possibility of light snow and icy roadways expected Thursday and Friday in areas of North Georgia.

Weather forecasts for areas of north Georgia and Forsyth County are calling for rain and snow, and possibly black ice accumulations on roadways as far south as Columbus beginning Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Due to the expected inclement weather, the Georgia Department of Transportation urges motorists to plan ahead before traveling during this timeframe and check weather and road conditions before heading out. “We are continuously monitoring current weather conditions and forecasts as snow flurries and high winds are predicted for north Georgia," said Keith Golden, Georgia DOT Commissioner. "Weather forecasts indicate snow, black ice, fallen trees and damaged traffic signals are possible from Thursday evening through …

A Year Ago ... Snow!

Do you miss the January 2011 snowstorm? Check out our slideshow of last year's wintry weather. Then take our poll and let us know how you feel about the frozen stuff.

A year ago today, metro Atlantans were battling a bear of a snowstorm. The storm dumped a half a foot or more of snow on the ground, closing schools for a week, disrupting some government services and leaving many of us in hibernation until the frozen stuff finally thawed. We may have temps in the 60s this week, but Patch wanted to share some cool images from last year's storm, shot by our editors, correspondents and readers. Enjoy.

If it's going to be cold, I want snow! Send me a note and I'll pick uop your groceries! I learned to drive in the stuff at an early age. Unless it's pure ice (or compacted snow), no worries here. Problem in this area is watching out for the other guy who doesn't know how to drive in the stuff.   more ›

Snow in Cumming?

Light snow is possible late tonight and early Tuesday across north and central Georgia.

It may be a little soon to be thinking about a "White Christmas," but according to the National Weather Service there's a good chance the white stuff is on its way. The special weather statement includes Forsyth County, along with dozens more, that may be affected with light snow. The weather experts report that there is enough cold air in place as the moisture moves into west Georgia late tonight to produce a light rain and light snow mix. But it's expected to change over to all light snow by sunrise on Tuesday. The good news all precipitation will end by mid-afternoon Tuesday. Another tidbit of good news, surface temperatures are not expected to drop below freezing, so any snow that falls will melt on impact. The outlook for Monday …
