Is Life Getting Harder for Middle-Aged People?

The suicide rate for people aged 35 to 64 increased 30 percent from 1999 to 2010, the New York Times reports.

Are Americans in the middle of their lives being stretched to the breaking point? The first decade of this century witnessed a dramatic rise in suicides among middle-aged people, The New York Times reports. The increase, about 30 percent among 35- to 64-year olds, has raised the question of whether "a generation of baby boomers who have faced years of economic worry and easy access to prescription painkillers may be particularly vulnerable to self-inflicted harm," according to the Times. The paper cites a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official who says the financial and family situations of baby boomers might be creating unique stresses, such as taking care both of their aging parents and their young adult children. News Nearby: Victims Found on GA 400, Greenway Died of Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wounds

Authorities have ended their investigations into the unrelated incidents.

Investigators have concluded that a motorist found dead in his car and a man whose body was found near the Big Creek Greenway both were the victims of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Police closed their investigations into the unrelated incidents today, said George Gordon, spokesman for the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. Alpharetta police responded to a call by a Georgia Department of Transportation HERO driver on Dec. 12. The HERO unit operator found a man inside a car on GA 400 northbound just north of Kimball Bridge Road. The man in the car was dead. Man Found Dead in Vehicle Near Cumming Fairgrounds

Authorities have ruled the death a suicide.

A Forsyth County man was found dead in a parked vehicle early Tuesday morning. According to Sgt. Bryan Zimbardi with the Cumming Police Department, the man's vehicle was found around 12:30 a.m. in a parking lot across from the Cumming Fairgrounds. Zimbardi said the 38-year-old man was dead upon the officer's arrival. "The man suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head," said Zimbardi. The man's vehicle was located through a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) after the victim's wife filed a missing person report with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office around 6 p.m. Monday. The man's name has not been released and foul play is not suspected. Zimbardi said the man's death has been ruled a suicide.
