GA 400 Tolls Slated to End in November

The GA 400 toll plaza is expected to come down on November 21, 2013.

Forsyth County commuters who travel on GA 400 and who are use to using the toll booth will notice a big change come this November - there will be no toll booth. The Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority said on Thursday the toll plaza will come down on November 21, reports WSBTV.com. Gov. Deal: GA 400 Tolls End in December 2013 Last summer Gov. Nathan Deal promised an end to the tolls by Dec. 1, 2013, saying that bonds issued by the state will be paid off by that time, allowing the tolls to be removed. But it looks like that measure has been moved to a week before Thanksgiving, weather permitting. A spokesperson of the Tollway Authority told WSBTV.com that it anticipates an 18 percent increase in volume once the tolls are removed. …

GA Marijuana Reform Group Reaches Out to Gov. Deal

The group is asking Deal to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases.

Advocates for marijuana law reform are calling on the state of Georgia to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases, according to a recent release from Georgia Campaign for Access, Reform, & Education (Georgia CARE). The call comes after state prosecutors said they lack the resources to prosecute a backlog of child exploitation cases in a January press conference. In Georgia, possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana carries up to 10 years in state prison. Roswell Police deal with their share of marijuana cases on a daily basis. A letter to Governor Nathan Deal from James Bell, director of Georgia CARE, asks the governor to direct state agencies to suspend the arrest and prosecution of marijuana possession cases …

Couple of thoughts, It should be decriminalized for Marijunana users. I do support using Marijuana for medical purposes. I have mixed feelings on using Marjunana for recreational purposes, however, as long you are not driving a vehicle after smoking Marijuana I am fine with that.   more ›

Forsyth Fire Chief Sworn In to Georgia Board of Public Safety

Forsyth County Fire Chief Danny Bowman is officially on the Board of the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

Governor Nathan Deal recently swore in Forsyth County Fire Chief Danny Bowman to the Board of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The Governor’s office announced the appointment of Bowman by Governor Deal to serve on the board last November, a press release stated. Bowman, who began his career as a firefighter for the Atlanta Fire Department in 1968, worked his way up the ranks. He eventually served in the chief administrator capacity for the newly formed Fulton County Fire Department and later as deputy fire chief, interim fire chief and battalion chief for Fulton County. He joined the Forsyth County Fire Department as division fire chief in 2001 and was promoted to assistant fire chief and EMA director in 2002. He has served as …

Forsyth County Closer to Imposing Energy Excise Tax

Gov. Nathan Deal says the tax is a barrier to attracting new manufacturing business and plans to phase it out in the new year.

Forsyth County Commissioners held a public hearing and first reading Thursday of an ordinance to collect an energy tax on manufacturers, the same tax the state is phasing out on Jan. 1 at the urging of Gov. Nathan Deal. Deal says the tax is a barrier to attracting new manufacturing business. But when state lawmakers agreed to reduce the tax by 25 percent each year for the next four years, they left the door open for local governments to make their own decision whether or not to collect the tax. Forsyth County Commissioners were quick to rush through the door, signing an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the city of Cumming two months ago to implement the tax. In order for the IGA to take effect, however, the county is required to pass…

VoterGa Questions Reason Ga. 400 Tolls Can't Come Down Now

Toll removal champion, Garland Favorito, reminds people the State Road and Tollway Authority still has to vote on Gov. Nathan Deal's pledge to remove Ga. 400 tolls next year and argues why they should be taken out now.

It's been a long time coming and while some are thrilled with the July 19 announcement that Gov. Nathan Deal has pledged to remove the Ga. 400 toll booth in December of next year, others feel it's not soon enough. Lead by nearby Roswell resident, Garland Favorito, VoterGa’s Free Ga. 400 project leaders have called for the removal of the toll since it was extended during 2010. The group presented Deal with 400 petitions on July 17 requesting that he adhere to the original Ga. 400 construction agreements between Atlanta and the state, according to a recent press release from VoterGa. "We are encouraged that Gov. Deal has once again pledged to remove the toll so that all Georgia transportation projects are funded in an equal manner for all …

Gov. Deal: GA 400 Tolls End in December 2013

The Governor said the state can't pay off bonds tied to toll revenue until after Dec. 1, 2013, or it would pay a penalty.

Gov. Nathan Deal promises that an end to tolls on GA 400 is in sight, though that won't be until after Dec. 1, 2013 – yes, next year. The Governor said bonds issued by the state will be paid off by that time, allowing the tolls to be removed. This will stop collection four years earlier than previously planned, according to a release sent out this morning. “Ga. 400 commuters have paid more than their fair share already, and this is the earliest we can bring it down without paying a penalty for early repayment of the bonds,” Deal said. “When the Ga. 400 toll went up, the state of Georgia promised commuters that it wasn’t forever. If we don’t keep that promise, we lose the faith of the people.” Commuters expected the GA 400 toll to come down…

Gov. Deal's Hands Tied With Georgia 400 Tolls

Tolls will likely stay in place until 2017.

Renewed calls by groups around metro Atlanta for Governor Nathan Deal to keep his campaign promise to remove the tolls on Georgia 400 prompted his office to give a response — which was essentially that his hands are tied. Governor Deal's spokesperson, Brian Robinson, sat down with 11alive to talk about the reason the promise had to be broken. "I think people of Georgia know the governor can't break contracts. They know what happened was not his decision and it's not what he would have wanted," Robinson said. A decision by former Governor Sonny Perdue and other board members of the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) was made just weeks before Deal took office to extend the life of the tolls. An estimated $40 million in bonds was taken …
