19 Die in Traffic Accidents over the Thanksgiving Holiday

Speed, alcohol or failure to wear a seat belt are blamed in almost all of the fatal crashes.

The 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period ended at midnight with 19 traffic fatalities reported across the state. The Georgia State Patrol investigated 11 of the 19 fatal crashes that occurred between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight. The 19 traffic fatalities is one more than in 2011. State troopers investigated a total of 622 traffic crashes during the period that resulted in 263 injuries. Of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers, alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in 4 of the crashes, and 7 of the victims were not using seat belts. There was one fatal pedestrian collision investigated by troopers. Almost all of the fatal crashes involved either speed, alcohol or the victim failing to use a seat belt. Local law …

Stay Safe on Georgia Roads This Holiday Weekend

The Georgia State Patrol will be in full force.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period begins this evening and traffic is expected to be heavy on Georgia roads throughout the holiday weekend. The Georgia State Patrol will be ready as well and in full force, according to a press release. Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, troopers will patrol during the holiday period in an effort to keep the number of traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities as low as possible. “We know from past experience that speed, alcohol, and failing to use seat belts are the primary contributing factors in fatal crashes,” he said. “By conducting concentrated patrols or holding roadchecks across the state, troopers, deputies and officers can intercept violators …

Forsyth County Authorities Expecting "Tremendous Crowds" at Lake Lanier

Forsyth County authorities are ready for the large crowds at the lake and Georgia State troopers will be patrolling interstates and secondary roads over the Labor Day weekend.

Forsyth County officials and the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) are gearing up for a busy holiday travel period. Labor Day weekend is typically seen as the last weekend of the summer season. According to Capt. Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department, authorities are expecting tremendous crowds on Lake Lanier over the three day weekend. During a meeting on Thursday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office, Shivers said every agency in the county discussed their holiday preparations and schedules. "For Forsyth County Fire we do have trained, equipped personnel on standby at the ready should we be needed to respond at Lake Lanier," he said.
