ReplyThe point of the article is to allow voters to back officials who get behind important issues such as banning synthetic drugs. In my May column last year, I addressed the same concerns Bells expresses and the problem has only worsened since then.

Thank you Fortune, I know that beam segment that wasn't easy to obtain. All counties should be so lucky to have a Chief Bowman!

On the article Politically Correct Pedophilia

"Sexual inclinations are among the most difficult to not act out and most psychologists will tell you that. Softening the legal stance and societal view of pedophilia via politically correct terminology is not constructive. There are good reasons why the condition is reviled and some things should be reviled."-- You hit the nail on the head here Faye. I agree with you 100%.

Whoa there Faye! Please try to understand, there are pedophiles who have never and will never actually act on their feelings. They try their very best to lead a normal life, work a job, contribute to society and do everything they can to successfully avoid acting on their feelings. That is much more honorable than committing suicide. This is one column where I must ask that comments stay on topic, which is how B4U-ACT's terminology obscures the line between right and wrong, possibly to very to a very dangerous point as we move through the next few decades.

ReplyI genuinely tried to convey as much understanding about pedophilia as possible in this piece. Nobody wants pedophiles to have a lifetime of emotional struggle with their feelings. That must be awful for some people and they (just as anyone else,) deserve a place to turn for help. I also clearly stated (see paragraph 4) that it's not the feelings pedophiles have that ignite the world with anger, it's what can happen as a result of those feelings. I also mentioned that B4U-ACT has its heart in the right place, but I think their approach to treating pedophilia is reckless in terms of making pedophilia seem a casual and common condition. Additionally, I mentioned societal respect for law-abiding pedophiles. Please do not villainize me or this article just because it doesn't celebrate pedophilia as much as you might like. The concept is extremely difficult to grasp, and gentle terms such as "minor-attracted children," hardly convey the complex feelings and fine line between thinking and acting on those feelings. This is why B4U-ACT's treatment should focus entirely on the pedophile's feelings, not publicized endeavors to reclassify terms with the APA.

ReplyMany harmful things, (ie. tobacco) provide legal revenue. That doesn't mean they are healthy or lead people in the right direction. That is why you no longer see tobacco billboards. You can thank America for removing them. Cafe Risque billboards are likely the next to disappear. I'm done now.

ReplyMarc, This is your battle with Jean, not mine. It's up to you to find a middle ground. I didn't wage the battle against legitimate businessmen. I don't have a problem with them. Nor do I take issue with billboards in general. I do have a problem with tacky strip club billboards lining I75 like birds on a wire. In Europe, billboards are nearly non-existent. The reason being is that they are considered a blight on the landscape. I cannot say I would call their point of view totalitarianism. I can say I would call it sensible.

The point of the article is to allow voters to back candidates who get behind crucial issues such as banning synthetic drugs. In my May column last year, I expressed the same concerns Bell is having. Since then, the problem of synthetic drugs has grown unchecked, and it's infecting communities everywhere.
