Mr. Stepp - I have traveled to over a dozen countries and heard what you said in various languages from people of various religious backgrounds. I spent several weeks in India this year and heard these philosophy almost word for word. The vast majority of the world is monotheistic. How do we know God? By wanting to know Him? By acknowledging there is only one true God? My Bible tells me that it is only through Jesus Christ can I have a relationship with Him. I whole heartedly agree Jesus offers us a relationship and man tries to corrupt and market it as religion. It does not mean that Jesus question of "Whom do men say that I am?" any less important.

Mr. Welsh - I do find myself in a predicament that evangelicals have found themselves in during many elections. I will most definitely vote none the less. Men my have the same opinion on an issue as I do even if I believe we have different values as a result of differing world views. I am less concerned about a president of a different religious belief system than I have being a president than him speaking in a church and the congregation believing it is the same.

I would like to thank all of you that our commenting on this issues. It is helping me to learn about the issues, American history, and popular opinion in our county. I would like to address the gentlemen that I think commented on this thread based upon my comment.
Mr. Schneider - I respect your opinion on the issue of the similarities between Catholicism and Baptists. I by no means desired to offend you. I do not know both views intimately being I have never been Catholic. I did not believe I was saying anything that was controversial when I said Baptist and Catholics have fundamental differences. In my comparative world religions course in college, in my time in northern Ireland, and during the 6 months I lived in Peru I had many conversations about Catholicism. During those discussions I came to believe we disagreed on the substitutionally death of Jesus Christ for my sins, priesthood of the believer, the origins of the church, grace, and several other doctrines I as a Baptist hold dear.

Mr. Whitney,
I would also like to say I do not believe that the congregation will get the most accurate view of a candidate from them speaking at their church. I would imagine when a candidate is speaking in GA he is a Bulldogs fan, loves the Varsity, the Braves, and is highly concerned with our school system. If he is in GA and in a church he is all those things and also able to throw out terms that he knows will incite applause by the congregation he addresses. For a baptist church, I mention that because it is the denomination of the church I attend, it would be words about "forgiveness", "reconciliation", "patriotic", etc. It does not mean he believes them any more than it means he knows who Chipper Jones is. It simply means he did his homework. We have access to their voting history and their speeches when we are not staring at them. I believe they are pretty sufficient to help us understand where they stand.

I am assuming since this statement concerning the smaller churches was so off topic from the rest of your comment it was not hypothetical but addressed to me. I will not argue my case that I am not prone to jealousy. I am certain it is something that it is something that I struggle with when loosing sight of my identity in Christ. I do say with a clear conscience it was not what motivated me to write this article.
The origins of the church do not start in the colonial times. You can not build an argument for the church based upon American history. It is faulty logic.
It political issues and morality is the primary concern than politicians of any belief system will make fine spokesman for our congregation. I believe if you look further back in history you find Biblical doctrine to be priority.

ReplyUnlike Mr. Whitney and Mr. Evelyn I am not a historian and do not have an extensive knowledge of our constitution. My knowledge of it is growing because I do understand its importance. As a practitioner in the world of Christian ministry I can tell you I do not believe that the faith of Mr. Gingrich is in alignment with the doctrinal statement of First Redeemer or the other Southern Baptist Churches of America.
Mr. Gingrich has the right as an American to his Catholic beliefs. I just do not believe that he can be true to these teachings and lead a congregation of Baptist people to believe they have the same belief system. They are fundamentally different even if they sound similar in sound bytes.

I know this may sound petty but I do not appreciate how either candidate/leader is treating the moderator or the rules of engagement.
