Forsyth Sheriff's Office Warns of Impersonator

The agency is investigating incidents of a man claiming to be a lieutenant and calling residents asking them to pay traffic tickets over the phone.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents to a man claiming to be a lieutenant with their agency.

The agency is investigating several reports of a man identifying himself as Lt. Jonathan Baxley, with a badge number 8836 and claiming to be with its Warrant Unit.

The man is allegedly telling residents over the phone that he has a warrant for a family member for failing to appear in court on a speeding ticket along Georgia 400.

"The male will usually identify the name of a family member," the agency wrote on its Facebook page. "The male will end the conversation by telling the person that if the matter is not cleared up in 30 minutes an arrest will be made. The male also adds that this can be taken care of by paying $362 on the phone through a debit or credit card."

The agency added it does not have anyone with the name of Jonathan Baxley employed in its offices and noted the scam has been taking place for the last six weeks in other metro Atlanta counties.

The incidents remain under investigation and the agency encourages residents to alert deputies by calling non-emergency dispatch at (770) 781-3087 or Criminal Investigations Division Investigator Ben Norton at (770) 781-3071.
